Uhuru, Ruto Photographer Reveals Why He Feared State House Assignment
Photographer Mwangi Kirubi, popularly known as Mwarv, has recalled how an unexpected call from a State House communications official landed him the assignment of taking campaign portraits of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his then deputy, William Ruto, in 2017. Mwarv said the opportunity came in May 2017 after the photographer initially selected for the job became unavailable, prompting a friend working at the State House communications office to recommend him as a replacement. He initially thought the call was a prank but changed his plans after confirming the assignment, returned home to collect his camera equipment and headed to State House for the afternoon shoot.
